The University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine will have a new home in the Harold and Bibby Alfond Center for Health Sciences at the school's Portland, Maine, campus. The college's move is part of a $93 million project that will consolidate the university's health degree programs at one site and allow it to educate more physicians.

OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
Three third-year medical students at the California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine talk about their experiences in surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics as they rotated through clinical clerkships. Milan Toma, Ph.D., an assistant professor of clinical sciences at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, developed an interdisciplinary program to connect his medical students with engineering students. "This interaction can eventually translate into how medical students interact with their patients, leading to improved health care because most patients come from outside medicine," Toma said.

The World Health Organization released a statement Monday that monkeypox will be renamed "mpox" in an effort to avoid potential stigma associated with the word. WHO officials said use of the new term will be phased in over a year, and President Joe Biden's administration welcomed the decision. The term "monkeypox" was created before the WHO released its best practice guidelines for naming diseases seven years ago.

The numbers of children becoming ill with respiratory syncytial virus are much higher than normal for the time of year in California and other states, and many hospitals are grappling with major case surges alongside rising numbers of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza infections. "We still haven't seen the top of this peak yet," said pediatrician Tami Hendriksz, D.O., dean of Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine -- California.

AACOM NEWS
The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth -- Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM) was recently awarded a $148.78 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to research the biology of Alzheimer's disease across ethnically diverse groups. AACOM interviewed Dr. Sid O'Bryant, project lead, and Dr. Frank Filipetto, TCOM dean, to learn more about the grant.

AACOM, the AAMC and the ACGME are forming a working group to draft new foundational competencies through an iterative and facilitated process that incorporates input from the medical community. The working group will include approximately 15 volunteer and appointed members who will work over the 2023 calendar year. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 5, 2022.
