Dr. Bray: Community ties help OSU-COM at Cherokee Nation | Noorda-COM committed to wellness | New York funds scholarships to support physician diversity
Natasha Bray, DO, dean of the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation, says that being located in Tahlequah, Okla., capital of the Cherokee Nation helps students serve the community by understanding the needs of the community. "Our students have the opportunity very early in their educational experience, during second semester of first year, to begin to have early clinical exposure through courses like service learning and community engagement," Dr. Bray said.
Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine will open in spring 2024 as Utah's largest medical school. A wellness curriculum is "designed to encourage students to take time for themselves during their lives and studies," said Sara Beaudry-Wiltse, PhD, director of interprofessional education and student wellness education.
The state of New York allocated $4.6 million to help diversify the physician workforce to increase access to care and reduce disparities. At Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, the funds are supporting partial tuition scholarships for 10 students as well as financial planning support and a summer anatomy course.
The Diabetes Institute at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is offering an 8-week program for all university staff and faculty with diabetes.
Baptist Memorial Health Care and Anderson Regional Health System have completed their merger. Baptist Memorial, which operates Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine, now includes 24 hospitals.

AACOM's Grants Program awards medical education and institutional research. Proposals that address emerging trends such as artificial intelligence and the expansion of osteopathic medical colleges and class sizes are of particular importance. Applications will close on January 31, 2024.
