Owen Saenz, a second-year medical student at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth -- Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, says his childhood years were unstable and he was headed in an unfavorable direction, but his older brother's turnaround helped inspire him to pursue a medical education. Saenz plans to spend his career treating children, and he participates in a camp program that encourages young people from underrepresented groups to study medicine.

OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine is participating in local efforts to raise awareness of Black history through art, events and speakers this month. The Dr. William G. Anderson Lecture Series celebrates freedom and justice and honors Anderson's legacy as a physician and civil rights champion.

Four medical students from the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine -- Diego Dominguez, Deseree Monique Jones, Matthew Choate and Merhawit Ghebrehiwet -- have been named 2023 George Kaiser Family Foundation Scholars in Urban Medicine.

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is partnering with Bethany College to offer guaranteed acceptance into the pre-osteopathic program at WVSOM. To be eligible, students must be in at least their sophomore year at Bethany, have a science GPA of at least 3.4 and complete eight hours each of biology and chemistry credit plus labs.

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, whose student body is 57% female and 23% from groups underrepresented in medicine, has received the 2022 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award given by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. "Our diversity drives our excellence," BCOM Dean William Pieratt, D.O., said.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine professor and chief of cardiology Todd Cohen, M.D., reminds patients that heart attack symptoms in women can differ from those experienced by men. Both may feel chest pain, pressure or tightness, but women also may have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal discomfort.

More medical schools have said they will no longer provide data to be ranked on the U.S. News & World Report "Best Medical Schools" list, citing concerns about how the information is used and interpreted. Five of the top-ranked schools are among at least 11 that have withdrawn.

Join AACOM's Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in this course developed to support residency programs with, and those that may consider applying for, Osteopathic Recognition. The course will take place from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CT on Feb. 23, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee. CME credit is available for the course.
