The New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine has established a research partnership with the St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center. Second- and third-year medical students can apply to participate in a year-long mentored program with the hospital's DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research and Education.
Medical students from the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine won an international simulation competition in Portugal, the school's third international victory since 2017. "This championship speaks to the simulation program and the integral component it plays in ACOM's curriculum and training," Associate Professor John Giannini Jr., MD, said.
Associate Professor Janice Blumer, DO, of Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest participated in a trip to provide care and training in the Dominican Republic. "One of WesternU's core values is humanism, which extends far beyond the borders of our towns, states or country," said Vice Dean Mandi Hudson, DO.
Lorena Marin, assistant director of admissions for the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, mentors dozens of students and leads camps and programs to help children and teens learn about careers in medicine. Marin says her life's work is to be a "cheerleader for student doctors."
An analysis of data from the American Joint Replacement Registry found that very few young patients need revision surgery in the eight years after total hip arthoplasty, according to a study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. "As we conduct further research on these patients over the next few years, we'll be able to continue to inform treatment decisions," said lead author David Cieremans, MS, a medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The first members of Generation Z have begun practicing medicine and the cohort is expected to make up 30% of the physician workforce in the next 10 years. Medical student Leith Ghani of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine said his generation's emphasis on personal connection fits the move toward patient-centered care. "I think a lot of time in medicine, the patients have the answers, it's just being able to ask the right questions or that they're comfortable answering your questions," Ghani said.

The Osteopathic Health Policy Fellowship is a year-long training program designed for osteopathic physicians and other individuals with an established connection to the profession to develop the skills they need to analyze, formulate and implement health policy on the local, state and national levels. Applications are due April 30, 2023.
