USDA proposes new USA labeling rules for meat, eggs

The US Department of Agriculture proposed a new rule that would allow labels on poultry, meat or eggs to use the phrases "Made in the USA or "Product of USA" only if the products were derived from animals that were "born, raised, slaughtered and processed" in the US. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said the labeling proposal would better align with consumer views after a survey commissioned by the agency found almost two-thirds of shoppers believe the "Product of USA" labeling meant that the majority or all meat manufacturing steps were performed in the US.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a regulation that would require public water systems to track per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, notify the public when PFAS and PFOA are present in water and take action to remove the chemicals if contamination exceeds 4 parts per trillion. The agency also wants to regulate four other PFAS as mixtures.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration needs to better account for groups such as women, children, older people and heavier people in the design of crash test dummies, the Government Accountability Office says in a report. "NHTSA recognizes this issue but doesn't have a comprehensive plan for improving how the data that dummies provide in crash tests can improve safety for all people," the GAO says, noting that NHTSA has agreed with its recommendation to create such a plan.

SAE International released a new J2908 standard, "Vehicle Power and Rated System Power Test for Electrified Powertrains," to make it easier to compare electric powertrains of different types of electric vehicles. "The flexible methodology of J2908 includes ways to incorporate known bench test data or make direct system measurements during a vehicle test," said Michael Duoba, research engineer at Argonne National Laboratory.

Textron Aviation has won approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to test its Aerosonde MK 4.7G unmanned aircraft system in Blackstone, Va. "We've shown that our Aerosonde system achieves an equivalent level of safety compared to conventional aircraft," said Wayne Prender of Textron Systems' Air Systems unit.

The Transportation Security Administration has published new rules that would require airports and aircraft operators to adopt approved cybersecurity plans. "This amendment to the aviation security programs extends similar performance-based requirements that currently apply to other transportation system critical infrastructure," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said.

Canada has awarded Magellan Aerospace a contract to develop and launch a new microsatellite to monitor objects in orbit. "It is critical that we are aware of what's happening in the space domain, so that we can monitor adversaries, support our allies, and safeguard our interests," said Defense Minister Anita Anand.
