A study of Medicare data in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that mortality rates, hospital readmissions, length of hospital stay and cost of care were similar between physicians with a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree and physicians with a doctor of medicine degree. Roughly 1 in 10 physicians in the United States has a DO, while roughly 1 in 4 medical students is enrolled in a college of osteopathic medicine.
The delivery of health care is shifting, and future models of care will transition from "sick care" to "health care" with a focus on prevention and primary care, said health care consultant Eric Shell, MBA, in a lecture at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine's Arkansas campus. "Primary care centers will be the revenue centers of the future," said Shane Speights, DO, dean of the campus.
