Osteopathic physicians are helping to meet the need for medical care in rural communities, with colleges of osteopathic medicine ranking among schools with the greatest share of graduates practicing in rural areas. Where medical students train is part of the equation, said Italo Subbarao, DO, dean of the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine. "They see the power and the value of what a primary care doc in a smaller setting can have," Subbarao said.

OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
With the passage of a new law in Texas, the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine is eligible for formula state funding that will enable reductions in tuition and program fees. The funding will help eliminate disparities in tuition costs between SHSU-COM and other medical schools in the state.

Stephanie Husen, DO, an Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate, is remembered by her friends and family for her kindness, generosity and compassion on the anniversary of her death. A scholarship was established as a memorial to Dr. Husen by the Class of 2004.

An agreement between Southwestern College and Kansas Health Science Center-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine will allow a select number of qualifying students to begin their first year of medical school in their senior year of undergraduate studies. "Ninety-two of the 105 counties in Kansas are considered partially or wholly underserved. This partnership with Southwestern will allow us to help reverse this trend by getting well-qualified, Kansas-based students into the workforce at an expedited pace," Kansas Health Science Center President Tiffany Masson, Psy.D., said.

Elmira College and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Elmira campus are launching an accelerated 6-year dual-admission program. The program will help meet the need for physicians in the region, said Richard Terry, DO, associate dean of academic affairs at LECOM-Elmira.

Americans with federal student loan debt are bracing for a resumption in repayments after a three-year pause, and many are grappling with how to fit the bill into their monthly budgets.
