Inuit TV channel debuts in Canada's 3 territories

Inuit TV, a cable channel dedicated to the Inuit community, was scheduled to launch this week in the three territories of Canada. The channel will feature some programming in English for Inuit who are not Inuktitut speakers, to help viewers -- particularly students -- learn from content that is for, by and about Inuit, with some material already coming from Alaska and the Inuvialuit Communications Society and more sought from Nunavut, Nunavik and Greenland.

Children of Ukrainian refugees evacuated to Yokohama, Japan, amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine are getting assistance from city officials with learning the Japanese language and receiving placement in local schools. The local board of education is also planning to provide Ukrainian-speaking counselors to support refugee children.

Teachers who responded to an informal survey said the affirmation, "The work I do matters," was the most impactful of four posed to them. They also offered their own suggestions, including "work smarter not just harder" and "focus on the good," while some teachers raised questions about the need for mantras to get through the day.

Fewer students means loss of funding for public schools

A decline in public-school enrollment in the US -- tied to the coronavirus pandemic -- is beginning to affect funding for education, which is typically driven by a student head count. In some cases, school districts have spent the past two years relying on temporary measures and emergency federal funding to avoid budget cuts, but now the funding losses are being felt with cutbacks.

The turnover rate among first-time teachers in Alabama is more than 50% -- higher than the national average of 44% -- according to an interim report by the Alabama Commission on the Evaluation of Services. Amber Bullock, policy lead at the commission, calls the findings "terrifying."
