OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
Graduates of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine practice in 51 of the state's 55 counties. "Our students learn an appreciation for rural practice, and they get to see how it's done," said WVSOM President James Nemitz. "Our job is to prepare our students to be the best physician -- the best osteopathic physician -- that they can be, and be able to go into whatever specialty they choose."

Medical students from the Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine will conduct in-depth annual health screenings for elementary school students in Provo, Utah. The screenings help fulfill Noorda's commitment to community service and also allow students to be role models, said Schyler Richards, vice president at Noorda-COM.

Leslie Ching, DO, a clinical associate professor at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, will serve as editor-in-chief of the American Academy of Osteopathy Journal. Dr. Ching said she wants to include articles on the perspectives of physicians, resident and students as well as the history and future of osteopathic medicine.

The new EU.1.1 COVID-19 variant, related to the XBB.1.5 variant, makes up 1.7% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., with Utah leading the nation with 97 EU.1.1 cases sampled. The variant is more transmissible than XBB.1.5 but doesn't stand out among other lineages now in circulation, said Rajendram Rajnarayanan, PhD, of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State.

Two Phase 3 trials indicate that a combination of microencapsulated benzoyl peroxide and microencapsulated tretinoin significantly improves moderate to severe acne vulgaris. "Together, these medications address multiple factors of acne pathogenesis without microbial resistance," wrote James Del Rosso, DO, an adjunct clinical professor of dermatology at Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine, and colleagues.

The US Supreme Court has held that the Education Department lacks congressional authority to implement President Joe Biden's plan to forgive $400 billion in student-loan debt. Julia Schumacher, who recently graduated with a Master of Science from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, expected help with student loans whose payments will be due soon. "I wasn't really sure how to react. It was immediate frustration," Schumacher said.

Dr. Dan Skinner, an associate professor of health policy at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, spent a year as a visiting professor at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. During his tenure, he delivered lectures on American health care and osteopathic medicine, taught a course on Comparative Health Systems and explored Health Tourism Management Specialization at Semmelweis.
