The college aims to increase the number of physicians serving rural or tribal communities, and students have rotations in small communities and in Indian Health Service clinics.

Charlie Brown, DO, a graduate of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, encouraged high school students to study medicine through the Future Healthcare Leaders' Summit in Akron, Ohio. "I think the first part is building relationships with your area hospitals and clinics and health care organizations just so that one they can be aware that there's an interest, and if so, the schools can foster those relationships," Dr. Brown said

The Pathway to Medicine Program of the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, Rowan College of South Jersey and Rowan University offers high school students guaranteed acceptance to medical school at Rowan-Virtua SOM. Five high school students who meet academic requirements will be accepted to the program.

Children undergoing surgery to correct pectus excavatum often experience high levels of post-operative pain, and research in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery conducted by faculty and students at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine mapped the intercostal nerves and identified a co-lateral branch of the intercostal nerve as a target for cryoablation to reduce pain. Sunghoon Kim, MD, a pediatric surgeon, has integrated the branch into his surgical approach, resulting in improved pain management.

The Arkansas Department of Health has identified a cluster of tuberculosis cases in Northeast Arkansas, and officials are warning that undetected cases need to be found and treated. "Because we're at the beginning cold and flu season, it can be easy to confuse tuberculosis with other respiratory illnesses," said Craighead County health official Shane Speights, DO, dean of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University.

AACOM's Grants Program includes awards for medical education research and institutional research. Institutional research is a broad category of work done at colleges (and across colleges within a profession) to inform decision-making and planning. Proposals pertaining to technology or artificial intelligence are of importance this year. The deadline to submit is January 31, 2024.
