Student physicians from osteopathic medical schools had a record-high 91.6% rate of matching in this year's National Resident Matching Program. "We are extremely proud of the DO graduating Class of 2023 and the dedication, flexibility and determination they displayed as they navigated the ever-changing landscape and challenges they faced during their four years of medical school," AACOM President and CEO Robert Cain, DO, said.
The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is the state's top source of physicians overall as well as rural and primary care physicians, WVSOM President James Nemitz, PhD, said in a State of the School address. "It's not only WVSOM's primary care physicians who are retained in our state, it's surgeons, anesthesiologists, dermatologists. The reality is that WVSOM produces graduates in all specialties who address the health care needs of West Virginia," Nemitz said.
A partnership between Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, and the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine aims to address the need for more physicians in the state. A select number of students at Newman University can accelerate their learning by beginning medical school in their senior year of college and completing undergraduate and medical school degrees in seven years.
Faculty members Carolina Restini, PhD, PharmD, and Clare Luz, PhD, of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine were recognized at Michigan State University's annual Outreach and Engagement Awards. Restini and her community partners worked with high school students to enrich high school education and create a sustainable program with medical students serving as educators. Luz was honored for her work with the City of East Lansing Prime Time Seniors Program.
Shamone Gore Panter, a 43-year-old mother of four, is honoring her deceased mother and sister by fulfilling a dream and studying to become an osteopathic physician. Panter is attending medical school through a partnership between Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and Cleveland Clinic, and program director Sandy Snyder, DO, says Panter is passionate about family medicine and committed to making a difference.

This year, AACOM celebrates a record residency Match and the largest class of DO students to ever participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)'s Match Week. According to the NRMP, the percentage of DO seniors matching rose to 91.6 percent, the highest ever during the single match era. In addition, the number of U.S. DO seniors participating was a record-high 7,436, an increase of 1.8 percent over 2022. Read more.
