District: Number of students with IEPs on the rise

The number of students with individualized education programs in Lee County, Fla., has increased since last year, says Theresa Bowen, the district's exceptional student education director. Part of the increase is an uptick in students requiring behavioral support, Bowen told school board members.

Teachers spark joy by building fun student connections

Oregon elementary-school teachers Eric Marsh and Jasmine Lowe are building student connectedness to help them cope with a return to in-person classes. Lowe allows decompression time at the end of classes, and Marsh gets students comfortable with math errors by showing videos of his failures while learning to ride a unicycle and by encouraging classroom camaraderie during problem-solving.

RAND study highlights Lexia® Core5® Reading success

More than half of K-12 schools are not offering employees additional paid sick time beyond their regular allotment during the coronavirus pandemic, according to an EdWeek Research Center survey. Some leaders also reported placing certain restrictions on the paid leave, such as applying it only to those who were exposed to the virus at work or those who tested positive, not just had a close contact.
