DOE explores nuclear applications for maritime industry | Environmental groups may hinder carbon progress | DOE to support power grid cybersecurity projects
The Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing Laboratory at Abilene Christian University in Texas has applied with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a permit to build a molten salt research reactor "to address the world's need for clean and safe energy, water and medical isotopes to treat cancer." The project would be the first advanced research reactor at a university and the first new US research reactor in more than three decades, with completion targeted by 2025.

ABS has received an $800,000 Energy Department contract to research the factors holding back the adoption of advanced nuclear technology in the commercial maritime sector, with assistance from the department's National Reactor Innovation Center at the Idaho National Laboratory. The researchers will also model advanced reactor technologies for maritime applications and establish an industry advisory committee on commercial nuclear power uses.
The Inflation Reduction Act carries a number of provisions aimed at decarbonizing the US, but policies that are friendly to natural gas are likely to see opposition from environmental groups, writes Eduardo Porter. Aside from natural gas, environmental groups have also voiced concerns over nuclear energy, hydropower, solar plants and wind power, Porter writes.
The Department of Energy will spend $45 million to fund up to 15 research projects intended to bolster power grid cybersecurity. "As DOE builds out America's clean energy infrastructure, this funding will provide the tools for a strong, resilient and secure electricity grid that can withstand modern cyberthreats and deliver energy to every pocket of America," said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

Ukraine and the UN have settled on a framework for a possible International Atomic Energy Agency mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant "via territory free from occupiers," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced after talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said this week that the organization can arrange an IAEA visit to the plant, but Russia has stated that officials cannot go through Kyiv to reach the facility.
