DUQCOM to begin recruiting medical students | CUSOM reaches out to serve Coharie Tribe | UNE COM medical students, administrators testify for Maine bill
Duquesne University College of Osteopathic Medicine has received pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, which will allow the school to begin recruiting medical students. The school plans to enroll 85 medical students in the fall, growing to 680 by the 2029-2030 academic year.
Medical students at the Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine participated in an outreach event to provide manipulative medicine treatments and other health services to members of the Coharie Tribe. About 40 people were seen, and "they loved the results and the experience, and we have been asked to return in the future," medical student Bethany Harting said.
University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students and administrators testified in person and in written comments to the Maine Legislature in support of a bill to help expand the health care workforce. "Granting medical students and residents increased access to rural communities will heighten their understanding of the social determinants of health that disproportionately impact rural areas," medical student Austin Vaughan said.
The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine has appointed Peter Bidey, DO, as dean of the Osteopathic Medical Program in Philadelphia, starting June 1. Dr. Bidey is a graduate and faculty member at PCOM and has acted as vice chair of the Department of Family Medicine since 2018.
Terry Hrubec, PhD, a professor of anatomical sciences at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine's Virginia Campus, co-authored a review in the journal Environmental Science & Technology of the safety of quaternary ammonium compounds used in disinfectants. It takes a large amount of QACs to cause acute toxicity, but studies have begun to show that day-in, day-out exposure over time is unsafe, Dr. Hrubec said.
Robert Lloyd, DO, has been named interim dean of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine's South Georgia Campus. Dr. Lloyd said he would carry on the work of William Craver, DO, who retired as dean at the end of April.
