The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine hosted the two-day annual conference of the West Virginia State Conference of Branches of the NAACP. "There is a crisis in many African American communities because of a lack of access to health care, and while I'm proud of the work we've done in delivering programs specifically for the African American community, I want us to do more," WVSOM President James Nemitz, PhD, said.

OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCATION
The University of New England and MaineHealth, the state's largest health care system, are partnering to improve the treatment of pain and create a chronic pain registry as a tool for epidemiological studies. "We envision using this registry to not only advance our understanding of chronic pain but also inform policy around public health issues while finding collaborative ways to problem solve and meet Mainers' health care needs," said Dr. Ling Cao, MD, of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Thomas Miller, DO, who grew up in western Montana and became an Air Force flight surgeon, felt a strong pull to return to his home state and has joined the faculty of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine-Montana. "Learning compassion and respect for patients begins on day one of medical school. All medical students can learn the necessary skills to make a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, but if patients do not feel understood by the provider, they will not cooperate with the plan," Dr. Miller said.

Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine assistant professor of pharmacology Wayne Parker, PharmD, discussed Alabama's high rate of opioid prescriptions at a conference on the risks of overdose. At the same time, illicit drugs laced with the synthetic opioid fentanyl have responsible for many overdose deaths.

Seven people have contracted malaria in Florida this year, but "there is really no need for concern," said Kruti Yagnik, DO, an infectious disease specialist at the Cleveland Clinic's Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla. The strain of malaria found in Florida is extremely treatable, and all seven have been treated and are doing well.

Fast track paying off student debt by applying for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Students to Service Loan Repayment Program. In exchange for serving in a community of need, medical students will receive money for school loans. Up to $120,000 is available in loan forgiveness, in addition to a competitive salary and benefits, for three years of full-time service or six years part-time. The deadline to apply for this program is Dec. 7, 2023.
