OSHA compliance officers will conduct inspections since it has launched an enforcement of the National Emphasis Program for Outdoor and Indoor Heat-Related Hazards, making sure to focus on both outdoor and indoor workplaces.
Trends such as the Serious Injuries and Fatalities framework and digitization of jobsite safety data are transforming how the construction industry approaches safety, experts said at a roundtable for Construction Safety Week. "Digitalization integrated into our workflow has allowed us to be proactive about collecting safety data and using those findings to advance our safety practices and operations across our project portfolio," said Paul Haining, chief environmental health and safety officer at Skanska USA.
One big factor holding back the adoption of new technologies in construction was the unavailability of Wi-Fi on many sites until a few years ago, rendering many digital solutions problematic. But the industry is now much more open to technology, writes Philip Russo, although the nature of highly varied projects and a shortage of skilled talent remain as challenges.
A main energy calculation is included in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' first standard to determine whether a building can operationally be considered net-zero for carbon emissions. Calculations to account for energy used or lost in extract form part of the standard, as well as generation and transit from an energy source to the building, with allowances made for sites where enough renewable energy cannot be generated.

OSHA plans to also hold a hearing May 10 to solicit public comments on how to improve outreach and training programs to support whistleblower laws.
The Colorado Legislature has advanced a bill that will streamline the permitting process for solar and contains nearly $1 million to spur the adoption of SolarAPP+ and similar solutions. SolarAPP+ is in use across 32 communities in the US and has processed more than 15,000 permits for residential solar projects.
