The Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine's Tahlequah campus met with the Health Resources and Services Administration's Tribal Advisory Council to discuss a grant funding medical residencies in tribal facilities. "Grant funding from HRSA allows us to provide residency slots that make sure they can stay close to home and still pursue ambitious careers in the medical field," writes Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the advisory council.
University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine students participated in the annual Fisherman's Forum through the University of New England Area Health Education Center's Care for the Underserved Pathways program. AHEC scholars provided on-site health screenings for Maine fishermen and their families while learning to practice in a multidisciplinary work group.
The Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine's first class of students at its Billings, Mont., campus will begin this July. "Our goal in teaching Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) is to help them and their patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but help prevent it, too," said John Moore, DO, assistant dean of preclinical education.
Conrad Fischer, DO, a practicing internal medicine physician and a professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, is also the Oscar-nominated co-producer of the film "Strangers at the Gate," along with activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Fischer says he feels strongly about telling the stories of people who don't have a voice.
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine researchers reported in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease that blood tests identified 97% of people who later developed cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. "Alzheimer's disease pathology begins a decade or more before the emergence of hallmark symptoms," said Robert Nagele, Ph.D., a professor of geriatrics and gerontology at Rowan-Virtua SOM and the founder and chief scientific officer of Durin Technologies.
The Resident Education Deferred Interest Act, reintroduced by House lawmakers, would allow interest-free deferment of student loans for physicians-in-training during medical or dental internships or residency programs, reducing provider shortages and easing the economic burden on doctors.
Every year, AACOM surveys graduating osteopathic medical students to gather key information about their educational experiences. This year, in addition to collecting our traditional survey responses from graduating seniors, we will also be asking students to share their reflections on three crucial areas including empathy, well-being and bias in the Match process.
