College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific medical students and other students at the Western University of Health Sciences worked with first responders in Lebanon, Ore., on a report detailing challenges faced by emergency services workers. "Working with the Lebanon Fire District, students have seen and experienced the strain of health care on EMS in Oregon, and their research into these issues will make a significant impact in the community and in the state of Oregon," said Jeannie Davis, EdD, assistant professor of population health at WesternU.

Former Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Dana Shaffer, DO, has been honored for his service on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. Dr. Shaffer served as chair and vice chair of the board among other roles and was first elected to the board in 2007.
Links have been found between dementia risk and periodontal disease, says Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine neuroscientist Cameron Jeter, PhD. "We're getting closer to understanding the causal links," Jeter says.
More than half the rural counties in the US lack a hospital with labor and delivery units, and in 27% of 216 rural hospitals, family physicians are the only medical professionals who deliver babies. HHS is investing nearly $11 million investment in rural health care, including family medicine residencies with an obstetrics focus.
