Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Thomas Cavalieri, D.O., has been named the first senior vice provost of the Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences and the Virtua Health system's chief academic officer. The Virtua Health College includes Rowan-Virtua SOM, the Rowan-Virtua School of Translational Biomedical Engineering & Sciences and the Rowan-Virtua School of Nursing & Health Professions.

Sandra Snyder, D.O., program director of the family medicine residency program at the Cleveland Clinic, discusses the 2023 Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award given by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to the Family Medicine residency program at the Cleveland Clinic's Family Health Center in Lakewood, Ohio. Snyder said the program is designed to train osteopathic and allopathic residents in osteopathic manual manipulation, eliminate disparities and barriers to care, and create a primary care physician workforce that reflects the diversity of communities and residents.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Latino Medical Student Association hosted a three-day conference to promote diversity in medicine. "We need to continue to help and try to diversify our medical field. We need to make sure we're representative of the population we're serving," said Luis Valdez, a medical student and co-director of the Latino Medical Student Association's southwest chapter.

"Demoralization syndrome" isn't just a term to describe patients with a loss of hope and purpose due to illness; it's also increasingly applicable to the way American physicians feel about their work, writes Northwestern University physician, psychoanalyst and political anthropologist Eric Reinhart, M.D., Ph.D. An estimated 117,000 physicians left the US workforce in 2021, while fewer than 40,000 were added. Many physicians struggle with feelings of disillusionment toward the systems in which they practice, Reinhart writes.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease tend to carry greater cardiovascular risks, according to Neethi Dasu, D.O., of the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, who presented research at the Crohn's and Colitis Congress. Higher mortality, longer hospital stays and greater costs were seen for IBD patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, compared to those who had only IBD.

The number of deaths of US physicians exceeded normal expectations by more than 600 for the period between March 2020 and December 2021, according to research based on data from the American Medical Association. "Beyond the deaths directly attributable to the virus, we see the extended impact by quantifying the number of physicians deceased beyond what would have been expected under normal circumstances," said Lindsey Carlasare, the AMA's research and policy manager and an author of the study.
