Cargill has launched a brand of canola oil with the lowest amount of saturated fat on the market -- up to 35% less than previous generations. "[T]he canola was bred to meet customer demands -- providing high yield and disease resistance for growers and taste, shelf life and fry life qualities for our food manufacturers and restaurant customers," said Lorin DeBonte, assistant vice president of Cargill research and development.

UK food-makers must take steps on acrylamide

Food manufacturers will need to include practical steps for managing acrylamide in their food safety management systems under the new EU acrylamide regulation, effective April 11. In response to the regulation, the Institute of Food Science & Technology has updated its Information Statement on Acrylamide in Foods, noting that the EU will "continually refine the benchmark levels in light of reduction strategies and new monitoring data."

FDA extends deadline for nutrition label changes

The FDA said it is extending the deadline for food manufacturers to revise nutrition labels, giving an extra 18 months to manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales and an additional 30 months to manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales. The label changes involve new requirements for nutrition facts, supplement facts and serving sizes on packaged foods, and the new dates are Jan. 1, 2020, and Jan. 1, 2021, respectively.
