IOM: Mudslides have destroyed nearly 5K Rohingya shelters

Mudslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Bangladesh have destroyed 4,889 shelters in a camp housing thousands of Rohingya refugees, according to the International Organization of Migration. A World Food Programme spokesperson says the flooding and mudslides have significantly increased the amount of aid needed in the camps compared to last year.

IOM raises concerns about migrant detentions in Yemen

Officials in Yemen must ensure that detained migrants have access to food, water, sanitation and health care, and should consider alternatives to detention, says the International Organization for Migration. Social networking companies such as Facebook and WhatsApp have not taken enough action to prevent their platforms from being used for human trafficking, says International Organization for Migration spokesperson Leonard Doyle. "People like to point fingers over the migration crisis, but a big part of it must be that the guy or the girl in the village with nothing but a cracked smartphone can actually meet a smuggler in a heartbeat," Doyle says.

IOM warns of increased deaths among Mediterranean migrants

Close to three times as many migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Africa have died this year compared to last year, according to the International Organization for Migration. More than 104,000 migrants have made the crossing to Europe this year and 2,075 have died in the attempt, the IOM says.

UNHCR, IOM appeal for aid for 3M Venezuelan refugees
