Kroger to pay $178M for regional retailer Roundy's

Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. will buy regional rival Roundy's for about $178 million, the companies said Wednesday. Roundy's operates 151 grocery stores and 101 pharmacies in Wisconsin and Illinois, under several banners including Mariano's, Pick 'n Save and Metro Market. The combined company will have 2,774 supermarkets in 35 states and Washington, D.C.

Kroger takes community outreach beyond food banks

The Kroger Co.'s charitable work goes beyond providing groceries to food banks and includes support for women's health, cancer programs, education and military service members and their families, Kroger's Communications Manager Ken McClure said. "They're really an example of how a company can make a difference on a significant issue facing the community," Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan's Vice President of Advancement Anne Schenk said of the retailer, which recently received an Outstanding Corporation Award.
