The Nicaraguan government has been complacent in the spread of violence, torture and repression in the country, says a United Nations report. "The level of persecution is such that many of those who have participated in the protests, defended the rights of the protesters, or simply expressed dissenting opinion, have been forced to hide, have left Nicaragua or are trying to do so," the report says.

Doubt grows over Nicaraguan canal project

The Nicaraguan Supreme Court recently approved the construction of a canal from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, based on a 2013 plan from a Hong Kong company. But the Chinese billionaire behind the project appears to have lost a sizable amount of his fortune in the Chinese stock market, and Nicaragua has been unable to find anyone else to fund the project.
