UOB taps Marketnode for digital bond offering

United Overseas Bank is piloting a digital bond offering using distributed-ledger technology platform Marketnode, a joint venture of Singapore Exchange and Temasek. "As more global issuers and investors come on board and participate in Singapore's digital capital markets, we will see further strengthening of Singapore's status as the region's financial hub," UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong says.

Iron ore up 10% amid increased China demand

Demand in China has pushed benchmark iron ore and steel futures to all-time highs, with the Dalian Commodity Exchange's iron ore futures up 10% and the Singapore Exchange's contracts up 9.5%. Navigate Commodities Managing Director Atilla Widnell says that currently, "market participants are trading iron ore derivatives like cryptocurrency ... not based on fundamentals, just pure momentum."

SGX derivatives volume rose 5% in April

Derivatives trading volume on the Singapore Exchange grew 5% to 17.5 million contracts in April compared to last year, driven partly by a 25% increase in commodities volumes. Trading of SGX's INR/USD futures grew by 38% to 1.4 million contracts in April, while USD/CNH futures volume grew by 13%.

PBOC calls for domestic yuan futures market

A working paper by the People's Bank of China calls for the establishment of an onshore yuan futures market to help investors protect against foreign-exchange risks. Domestic Chinese investors do not currently have access to offshore yuan futures, such as those offered by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, the Singapore Exchange and CME.

Quantitative Brokers' algorithms launch in Japan
