Papers examine environmental conservation issues

Authors of three research papers offer perspectives on efforts to conserve ecosystems and protect species. Geographer Erle Ellis of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, who co-authored one of the papers, highlights the long-term influence of humanity on the environment. "Even 12,000 years ago, nearly three-quarters of terrestrial nature was inhabited, used and shaped by people," Ellis says. "Areas untouched by people were almost as rare then as they are today."

U. of Md. to spend $40M on faculty diversity

The University of Maryland, College Park, wants to "right-size" its faculty to be more representative of the 40% of the student population who are people of color by spending $40 million over the next decade, says President Darryll Pines. The money will help recruit more than 100 diverse faculty members and improve staff opportunities, leadership development, retention and campus culture, Pines says.

JPMorgan Chase backs UMD small business initiative

JPMorgan Chase is giving $3 million to an initiative that helps small, minority-owned businesses affected by gentrification, particularly those that have become more vulnerable amid the coronavirus pandemic. The initiative is led by the University of Maryland and will first focus on businesses in Washington, New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.

Brandywine to develop mixed-use project in Md.

Quantum computing startup IonQ's recently announced plans to go public have increased interest in the Discovery District development near the University of Maryland's College Park campus. Brandywine Realty Trust was selected to develop a 5-acre parcel of the Discovery District, with the first phase including 300,000 square feet of office space. "We feel that there's a pent up demand for businesses that want to improve their synergies with top-tier universities, so we fell like that demand is there," says Brandywine's John Norjen.

3 US universities join list of Accellion victims

Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Maryland at Baltimore join the list of government and corporate victims that used Accellion's file-transfer protocol.
