Pa. cardiologist sentenced for health care fraud

Samirkumar Shah, a cardiologist from Fox Chapel, Pa., was sentenced to 78 months in prison after being convicted of two counts of health care fraud. Authorities said Shah submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance companies for medically unnecessary external counterpulsation between 2008 and 2013.

A class action lawsuit was filed against the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a business associate, law firm Charles J. Hilton & Associates, over a data breach at the law firm last year that exposed financial and protected health information of more than 36,000 UPMC patients. The lead plaintiff says his identity was stolen through the breach and accuses the defendants of negligence, invasion of privacy and other violations.
