Data show wide gaps in per-pupil spending nationwide

Per-pupil spending varies widely between states in the U.S., as well as between the richest and poorest school districts, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2013, education spending averaged $10,700 per pupil -- with Utah spending the least ($6,555) and New York spending the most ($19,818).

Previously, the bureau categorized such couples as "unmarried partners," even if they were legally married at the time. The data showed that among the 56 million married-couple households in America, 251,695 of them, or just under 0.5% of the total, were same-sex couples.

Americans buying fewer appliances

Americans shipped $4.3 billion worth of household cooking appliances in 2012 -- a 10.8% decrease from 2007, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Tuesday. The value of small electrical appliance shipments in 2012 was $3.4 billion, a 13.9% decrease from 2007.
