Canada worries softwood issue may strain U.S. relations
Canadian CEOs say they are worried that tightened borders in this time of war, as well as the ongoing softwood lumber dispute, could slow trade between the two nations. Oil prices fall below $30 per barrel

Move to open ANWR to drilling fails

GAO report: Contracting costs put Energy Department in debt
With more than 100,000 contract employees, the Energy Department is the largest nonmilitary contracting agent in the U.S. government. The department has been working on a reform effort for nine years to try and control its contracting costs.   Boston.com/Associated Press (3/20)

Louisiana-Pacific sells land to Red Town Timber
L-P yesterday announced it has sold 29,000 acres in Texas to the Georgia timber company for approximately $21 million. The company said Monday it plans to spend $80 million on capital projects this year with a focus on reducing costs.   American City Business Journals/Portland (3/19)

Washington state works on forest plans
Foresters will use new forest science in updating management plans for the Idaho Panhandle and Kootenai forests. The use of motorized vehicles on forest land is expected to be a big issue during the revision process.   The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Wash.) (free registration) (3/18)

Great Northern mills only have one taker
Great Northern executives say they are disappointed that Belgravia is the only company to have bid on the shuttered mills in northern Maine. Greeting card industry's ethnic niche grows
New types of greeting cards have emerged from the stream of 7 billion sold each year. Women and minorities in the industry say they feel boosted by SBA statistics that reveal small companies owned by women are growing four time faster than other businesses.   USA TODAY (3/19)

Scientists are examining the tree's growth patterns to try and capture part of the expanding alternative medicine market.
