Nielsen: Wine world would gladly toast the next big innovation
Craft beers and new beer flavors and brands are cutting into wine sales, according to Nielsen. The wine industry's growth slowed to 1.5% last year, down from 4% in 2011, while beer and liquor were up 2% each, despite encouraging trends such as wine sold at Starbucks and a 23.5% jump in New Zealand's wine business. "I keep saying, 'What is the next big thing?' And I don't know what the magical answer is. ... Beer and spirits are doing a lot [of innovation] right now and I think that's helping them," says Danny Brager, Nielsen's vice president and group client director of the beverage-alcohol team.
