Patient education may curb excessive use of antibiotics
The rate of antibiotic use to treat uncomplicated acute bronchitis among teens and adults decreased from 80% to 68% in clinics that provided printed materials on the condition, and from 74% to 61% at practices that provided a computer alert to nurses, a study of 33 primary care practices found. The results suggest that patient education may help prevent antibiotic overuse, researchers reported in JAMA Internal Medicine.
