Corporal punishment linked to greater disease risk in adulthood
Children who are subjected to corporal punishment may have a greater likelihood of suffering from cancer, heart disease or asthma as adults, Plymouth University researchers wrote in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine. Abuse-related stress early in life might result in biological changes that can predispose children to disease, the researchers said. However, the study was based on retrospective reports, and confounding factors such as poverty and social isolation cannot be ruled out, experts said.
