Canadian chemical firms expect railway-safety review, U.S. lags
The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada is expecting a broad reassessment of the country's shipping rules for hazardous materials in the aftermath of the Quebec railway crash. "[We]'re going to see some serious re-examination of some of the rules and regulations around movement of hazardous goods and that's probably a good thing," said David Podruzny, vice-president of CIAC. Separately, a report says the U.S. is nine months late in issuing a proposal to address similar rail-safety concerns, with the measure originally expected in October of last year.
