Motivational interviewing may help patients change behaviors
Convincing patients to change lifestyle behaviors to improve their health can be frustrating, physicians say, but using alternative communication models that focus less on instructions and more on questions can help. Dr. Frank Domino, a family medicine professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, said motivational interviewing is a way for physicians to begin to get patients to identify what they want to do to improve their health.
