Focus on reading, math affects science instruction in some schools
To meet federal benchmarks in reading and math, some elementary schools in Kansas and elsewhere have reduced the time spent on science lessons, and instead are focusing on reading and math skills. School officials say more attention to science instruction is coming as they develop ways to incorporate more math and reading into science lessons, but some parents and others remain critical of the recent decisions regarding science education.
