HHS: Consumer share of health spending declines for now
Medical costs are still an issue for families, but the portion of U.S. health care spending covered by consumers declined to its lowest level in decades in 2011, according to HHS data. Reasons include patent expirations for costly drugs, which have reduced prescription costs through the addition of more generics. Health experts said, however, all signs point to higher consumer spending in the future.
