Massage therapy may help strengthen preemies' immune systems
Immune cells in premature babies who received gentle massage had better killing ability than in babies who had not received massage therapy, a study in the journal Pediatrics found. The babies in the massage group also gained more weight than the control group, though both groups had similar rates of infection and lengths of hospital stay. Although it remains unclear how massage boosts the immune system, the findings suggest that stress inhibits the activity of natural killer cells.
