Students are often rewarded for good behavior with prizes, writes Tracey Garrett, an associate professor of teacher education. In this opinion article, Garrett offers some advice for effectively managing a classroom beyond a narrow system of rewards. She recommends teachers take pre-emptive approaches that include an organized physical environment, rules and routines, caring relationships, engaging instruction and addressing discipline issues.
