Historical, informational texts get more emphasis in core standards
Among the many changes accompanying the transition to the Common Core State Standards is a shift toward having students read more nonfiction or informational material, and less fiction. Famous speeches, such as Winston Churchill's "Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat" address to the House of Commons, will be among the reading assignments for students, as schools emphasize the importance of understanding and analyzing information from various sources. The introduction of more nonfiction text is also meant to help prepare students to understand the kind of materials they will read in college and for careers.
