What Finland's schools can teach the U.S.
Finland, where teachers are trained for free, has a lot it could teach the U.S. education system, writes Leslie J. Winner, executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Among other things, the U.S. should invest in teacher-education scholarships, increase teacher support and eliminate unnecessary rigidity from the classroom, Winner writes in this opinion article. "By investing early and aiming to reduce turnover, we would increase respect for teachers and decrease the annual demand for teachers, creating the kind of virtuous cycle the Finns have," Winner writes.
