The concrete roof at the Jasper Place Library in Edmonton, Alberta, stands without support from columns or beams. The roof, which is about 12 inches thick, gains its balance from being "folded" through the use of peaks and troughs. "If you use concrete in the right way, it can do some pretty remarkable things," said architect Michael Dub, who works with one of the designers of the building. "The structure is incredibly [rigid]. It will barely move over time. All structures move. This one won't."
