Research ties hypertensive retinopathy to elevated stroke risk
An analysis of data involving 2,907 individuals with hypertension from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study found that those with hypertensive retinopathy had a greater long-term risk of suffering a stroke than patients without the retinal condition. The findings, published in the journal Hypertension, suggest that retinal photography has potential as a tool for assessing stroke risk.
