New rules for in-plan Roth 401(k) conversions were introduced in the American Taxpayer Relief Act and provide new planning opportunities. The rules allow for in-plan conversions even if the person is not eligible to take a distribution from the plan. The change has considerably broadened the scope of who can make a conversion.
