U.S. hospitals lose a combined $8.3 billion each year by continuing to use antiquated communication technologies, according to research conducted by the Ponemon Institute. Clinicians waste an average of 45 minutes each day using inefficient tools such as pagers and e-mail, the study found. That detracts from the time clinicians can spend with patients and increases patient discharge time, Ponemon Institute founder Larry Ponemon said.
