Salmonella bacterium lethal to HIV-infected Africans, study says
An invasive non-Typhoidal Salmonella intestinal disease causes death in up to 45% of people infected with HIV in Africa, according to research by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Researchers also discovered that patients who have weakened immune systems due to malnutrition and malaria are also at risk of the disease. Health experts are worried the medical infrastructures across the continent are not geared up to detect Salmonella typhimurium, the dangerous bacteria that causes iNTS.
