Researchers study how our own bacteria might make us sick and well
Recent research, including the Human Microbiome Project, shows how gut bacteria affect health and are essential for digestion, but studies also are looking at how the human flora might cause problems including whether bacterial composition is linked to autism and inflammatory bowel disease, scientists say. While microbiome research is in its early stages, researchers are studying how to alter internal ecosystems using probiotics and fecal transplants to rebalance bacterial populations to treat disease.
