SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Social Media — tracks feedback from leading marketers about social media practices and issues. Paul Chaney, Internet marketing director for Bizzuka, author of “The Digital Handshake,” and member of the SmartBrief on Social Media Advisory Board, helps create the questions and analyzes the results. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter and feature Paul’s analysis on this blog.

Last week’s poll question: What is your opinion of the FCC’s stance on net neutrality?

  • It’s about time the feds stepped in; keep the Internet open to everyone, 43%
  • Needless government meddling; let the free market work it out. 40%
  • No opinion/other, 12%
  • I agree with the telecoms; there should be a prioritization of service. 5.29%

“Whether the FCC steps in to mandate it, or whether free enterprise works it out, the tenor of these results is to keep the Internet open and as free for anyone to use as possible. That’s certainly my stance. The idea of creating a tiered structure ( an Internet usage “caste” system if you would) flies in the face of the promise the Internet holds, especially in this new landscape called the social web. While I’m no fan of increased government regulation, I do support a free and open Internet. If one is required to ensure the other, that’s the way it will have to be.” –Paul Chaney
