Does cultural fit matter?

SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Workforce — tracks feedback from leading managers and HR practitioners. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: Have you ever fired someone because they weren’t a good cultural fit?

  • Somewhat — it has been a factor before but it wasn’t the only thing, 47%
  • Yes — we have fired for being a bad cultural fit, 31%
  • No — cultural fit doesn’t play a role in who we fire, 23%

Three in four companies have used cultural fit in firing at least one person (and for almost a third, it was the only thing they considered in that instance). I find that intriguing since cultural fit is such a tough thing to capture in the interview process. With diversity and inclusion continuing to be on many HR professionals’  minds, I wonder how these results could lead to possible complications?
