Agentic AI can ease burnout among CTI analysts

How agentic AI can relieve the talent crunch without replacing analysts.

Analyst fatigue and burnout are emerging as a silent crisis for cyber threat intelligence teams. Expanding attack surfaces, growing data volumes and rising expectations for rapid intelligence are colliding with internal reorganizations and layoffs across the industry. CTI teams consistently see demand rise even while head count remains the same or declines. Resilience becomes fragile when key team members leave, and the remaining team is expected to do more with less. The result is slower decision-making, missed context and a persistent backlog that increases burnout risk.

Why the workload breaks teams

The day-to-day drag on CTI teams spans intake triage, multiple-source data, correlation, first-pass analysis and report formatting. Analysts are also exposed to “data fatigue” stemming from too many alerts and frequent context switching, leading to wasted human expertise.

Analysts often spend disproportionate time on mechanical work, such as gathering, normalizing, de-duping and correlating inputs. Tool and feed sprawl creates a context-switching tax as teams jump between portals, formats and tagging schemes. Reporting overhead, writing, formatting and rephrasing for different audiences drains time from analysis and judgment.

The key shift: Augmentation, not replacement

The end goal is not autonomous cyber defense or the removal of human judgment. The goal is to offload repetitive work while keeping humans accountable for decisions. Agents can handle structured investigation steps, and experts can focus on higher-value calls. Humans stay responsible for judgments on impact, prioritization and action, while agents provide the first pass and supporting scaffolding. When done correctly, this type of augmentation preserves institutional expertise by reducing interruptions and cognitive overload.

The anticipated value of agentic AI extends beyond workflows to include intelligent reasoning, feedback loops, custom skills and autonomous tool use. It can maintain context across steps by linking what was asked, what was found and what is missing. Agentic AI can be specialized by role, collection, analysis and reporting, mirroring how CTI teams operate.

Trust and governance remain central. Agentic systems need to provide citations and sources, intermediate notes and clear working steps so analysts can validate outputs. This allows analysts to catch misinterpretations early and redirect the investigation before time is wasted. In practice, trust is built through reviewable work products, not black-box verdicts.

High-leverage use cases where agentic AI can support CTI teams

The highest-leverage agentic AI applications are scaling structured investigations where judgment calls are limited and handoffs are clear. This goes beyond elementary use cases like daily/weekly threat briefs, first-cut analysis and quick triage reporting. Impactful agentic AI use cases include:

  • Supply chain intelligence and risk management: Determine and monitor vendors’ exposure to actively exploited vulnerabilities, threats or incidents.
  • Timeline reconstruction: Correlate and sequence logs from security sensors to rebuild an end-to-end timeline of attacker activity.
  • Prioritization of actively exploited vulnerabilities: Identify them in real time to prioritize patching, rather than relying on Common Vulnerability Scoring System scores.
  • Retrospective threat hunting: Search historical logs for positive hits on new indicators of compromise from updated threat intelligence and advisories.

Implementation: Not a rip-and-replace operation

Organizations can deploy agentic AI without rebuilding their security stack by connecting agents to the sources teams already use, such as internal enterprise tools, open-source intelligence and commercial feeds. With this approach, the agent acts as a coordinator that pulls, correlates and summarizes, while primary systems (security information and event management & identity and access management) remain in place. Integrations can expand over time, starting with read-only access and controlled outputs before moving to closed-loop actions.

Measuring AI impact would mean looking beyond typical tactical-level metrics, such as mean-time-to-investigate or reduced reporting time. Given the scale of agentic AI’s potential, resilience-focused metrics such as reclaimed analyst capacity (hours per week), capability building and improvements in the return on investment of existing tools and intelligence quality should be brought into focus. For example, in measuring quality, CTI leaders should look for fewer rework cycles, more consistent outputs, fewer missed context links and improved stakeholder satisfaction with clarity and actionability. These baseline metrics are key for teams to demonstrate gains to management and catch quality lapses early, as they start to adopt and scale agentic AI capabilities.

Over time, the most important advantage is durable, auditable institutional knowledge. Unlike typical business-to-consumer AI agents, each investigation is added to the collective intelligence that the agents and analysts can reference, speeding ramp-up time and reducing repeated work. This helps CTI teams move from reactive summarization to proactive, hypothesis-driven intelligence while better leveraging the expertise already within the organization.

In this respect, enterprise teams may also have to consider the limitations of using general AI agents that are deployable only on a singular instance. Analysts on these singular instances would see their insights siloed from the rest of the team, limiting their ability to share resources and learnings. Additionally, singularly deployed AI agents can be considered “stateless” because they do not carry context across disparate chats. This costs enterprise teams the ability to save the learnings of previous investigations and miss out on the larger value of compounding organizational intelligence. 

AI agents are ultimately a means to an end for enterprises, and it is key for CTI teams to think beyond tactical automation and identify what the larger value of agentic AI would look like for them.
