School adopts new approach to discipline

A public charter school in Texas has reversed its approach to school discipline after recognizing its policies were not providing students with the support they need. Instead, the school eliminated suspensions and adopted restorative-justice methods, including mindfulness exercises and one-on-one counseling.

Study looks at mental health issues in US youths

Researchers found that 7.4% of children and teenagers in the US had behavioral or conduct problems, while 7.1% had anxiety and 3.2% had depression. The findings in The Journal of Pediatrics, based on 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health data involving 43,283 youths, also showed that 78.1% of those with depression received treatment, compared with 59.3% of those with anxiety and 53.5% of those with behavioral and conduct problems.

Resources help identify successful SEL models

Two tools, the SEL Assessment Guide and the RAND Education Assessment Finder, aim to identify schools making strong gains in social and emotional learning. Peer school districts can use the resources to find successful models, learn from their experiences and create initiatives for implementing SEL in ways that are systemic and sustainable, Jeremy Taylor of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning and Laura Hamilton of the RAND Corporation write in this commentary.
