Last week, we asked: Do you have a program that identifies internal talent for open and future positions?

  • Yes, but it is informal — 41%
  • No — we do not have any program — 38%
  • Yes — we have a formal program — 21%

I’ve got a secret to share: I hate informal development and talent-identification programs. These programs are often perceived by line-level employees as random or unfairly preferential. Here’s my challenge for the new year: Formalize these talent-identification programs and advertise them throughout your organization. This is a major part of any decent retention program.
